The last night of the year. Now the days of winter begin and the Goblin King rides abroad, searching for his bride…

All her life, Liesl has heard tales of the beautiful, dangerous Goblin King. They’ve enraptured her mind, her spirit, and inspired her musical compositions. Now eighteen and helping to run her family’s inn, Liesl can’t help but feel that her musical dreams and childhood fantasies are slipping away.

But when her own sister is taken by the Goblin King, Liesl has no choice but to journey to the Underground to save her. Drawn to the strange, captivating world she finds―and the mysterious man who rules it―she soon faces an impossible decision. And with time and the old laws working against her, Liesl must discover who she truly is before her fate is sealed.

Rich with music and magic, S. Jae-Jones’s Wintersong will sweep you away into a world you won’t soon forget.

I loved everything about Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones.  The descriptive writing paints an amazing picture of the beauty and darkness of the underground creating a setting that is frightening, mysterious, yet so lovely.  The characters have genuine personalities that grow and deepen as one progresses through the novel.  The longing and desperation in the characters for friendship, love and family is revealed through their incredible voices, actions and choices for themselves and each other.

Elisabeth (Liesl) is the creator of beautiful music, but her talent is not recognized by many.  She is a young woman who hides behind the talent of her younger brother.  Elisabeth has grown up believing in the stories passed down by her grandmother, Constanze, but doesn’t have the time for them any longer.  As a young girl she played and danced with the Goblin King, but now her responsibilities lie with her family.  Protecting her younger sister Kathe and supporting her younger brother Josef has become her life.

Der Erlkonig, the Goblin King, is dark and twisted, filled with magic and mischief.  He is dangerous and not to be trusted.  He is a connoisseur of music, the little boy that Liesl played with as a child in the woods.  The little boy who repeatedly asked for Liesl’s hand in marriage as a child.  The Goblin King is the ruler of the underground, and now he has tricked Liesl’s sister Kathe into marrying him.

Secrets inhabit the underground:  fairy lights, demons. goblins and trickery all inhabit the dark tunnels of this fascinating world.  Once entering this world with Liesl, I didn’t want to return and could not put the book down.  This novel is beautiful and heart breaking.  I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves YA fantasy and fairy tales.
