Complete and total dysfunction is the perfect description for Gone without a Trace by Mary Torjussen. I was totally blindsided by this book, the twist and turns kept coming, and I didn’t know what to expect until the very end. This novel is so disturbing, not one character has a redeeming quality. Hannah’s family is unsettling and intense and her friendships are depraved.
Hannah returns home from a work meeting with great news, talk of a promotion in her future that is financially and professionally lucrative. She can’t wait to tell Matt, her boyfriend of four years. Instead of surprising Matt, the surprise is on her. Matt is gone, literally, without a trace. Everything that belonged to him is gone and her house looks just like it did before he moved in with her.
Hannah is relentless when it comes to finding Matt and many things come into play. Hannah’s work obviously suffers, but that is in part to a jealous colleague. Her relationship with her best friend Katie, which happens to be truly nauseating, is unstable and tricky. But that’s not all, Hannah is also receiving messages, notes, and phone calls from someone who happens to be going into her house when she isn’t home.
This book is filled with chaos and completely unpredictable. I had a hard time putting this book down because I had to know what was going to happen next. There is a lot going on in this novel, keeping the suspense level and interest level high. I definitely recommend this book to those who love to read suspense.
