But when she discovers the body of a fellow nurse in the dense bush by the river, deep in the woods near her cabin, she is plunged into a disturbing mystery that could shatter the carefully reconstructed pieces of her life all over again.
As clues begin to surface, Amelia finds herself swept into an investigation that hits all too close to home. But how much is she willing to risk in order to uncover the truth and bring a killer to justice?
New York Times bestselling author Heather Gudenkauf has been described as “masterful” and “intelligent” and compared to Lisa Scottoline and Jodi Picoult. Introducing her most compelling heroine yet, she delivers a taut and emotional thriller that proves she’s at the top of her class.
Not a Sound by Heather Gudenkauf is an intense thriller that kept me guessing from beginning to end. The writing is compelling and once I started, I couldn’t put this book down.
Amelia Winn lost her hearing in a tragic accident. Not being able to come to terms with her hearing loss and the effect on her career, she turns to alcohol. She cuts herself off from family and friends and loses her husband in the process.
With the help of her hearing dog, Stitch, and finding solace in the water and hiking she is able to accomplish at her cabin in the woods, Amelia is finally able to resume her life. Unfortunately, her latest outing on her kayak, leads her to discover a dead body, her old friend and colleague, Gwen Locke. She immediately contacts the authorities and the mystery begins.
I loved the characters in this book. Amelia is a strong woman who has overcome a great deal. Although hearing impaired, she is relentless to resume her career as an ER nurse. She takes her first step by applying for and accepting a position filing and updating records for a prominent oncologist, Dr. Huntly
Jake, a longtime family friend to Amelia and a police detective is intelligent, patient, and a huge support system. I immediately fell for Jake and found myself cheering for a relationship between the two characters to blossom.
There is a lot going on in this story and figuring out the ties and relationships between people and events keeps the reader engaged. I found myself questioning everyone throughout the story. Anyone looking for a book to read this summer will not be disappointed by this one. The pacing is great, the storyline is intriguing and twists and turns will definitely keep you on your toes!
