This is the story of three best friends: one who was murdered, one who went to prison, and one who’s been searching for the truth all these years . . .
When she was sixteen years old, Angela Wong―one of the most popular girls in school―disappeared without a trace. Nobody ever suspected that her best friend, Georgina Shaw, now an executive and rising star at her Seattle pharmaceutical company, was involved in any way. Certainly not Kaiser Brody, who was close with both girls back in high school.
But fourteen years later, Angela Wong’s remains are discovered in the woods near Geo’s childhood home. And Kaiser―now a detective with Seattle PD―finally learns the truth: Angela was a victim of Calvin James. The same Calvin James who murdered at least three other women.
To the authorities, Calvin is a serial killer. But to Geo, he’s something else entirely. Back in high school, Calvin was Geo’s first love. Turbulent and often volatile, their relationship bordered on obsession from the moment they met right up until the night Angela was killed.
For fourteen years, Geo knew what happened to Angela and told no one. For fourteen years, she carried the secret of Angela’s death until Geo was arrested and sent to prison.
While everyone thinks they finally know the truth, there are dark secrets buried deep. And what happened that fateful night is more complex and more chilling than anyone really knows. Now the obsessive past catches up with the deadly present when new bodies begin to turn up, killed in the exact same manner as Angela Wong.
How far will someone go to bury her secrets and hide her grief? How long can you get away with a lie? How long can you live with it? Find out in Jennifer Hillier’s Jar of Hearts.
I made a dumb mistake and waited a few weeks to write this review. I thought that if I waited to write it I could get my words together to express how amazing this story was. But waiting made it so much harder and I truly don’t think I could ever possibly write a review to do JAR OF HEARTS justice.
JAR OF HEARTS by Jennifer Hillier is one of the best books I’ve ever read. And I’ve read a ton of books. The rawness of her writing, the suspense, the twists and turns. . . truly one of the best crafted stories ever.
JOH is Georgina Shaw’s story. When Georgina was only sixteen her best friend (and the most popular girl at school), Angela Wong, went missing. Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and before they knew it fourteen years went by and people still had no idea what happened to Angela. Until one day the police discovered that Calvin James, a man responsible of murdering at least three other women, was also responsible for murdering Angela.
Calvin was the older bad boy that Georgina couldn’t get enough of. He was her first love. Their relationship was all-consuming and violent. . . until it ended because of what happened the night Angela was murdered.
Now, Georgina, a super successful executive for a pharmaceutical company, is arrested for her part in the murder. She sentenced to jail but there’s still so much everyone doesn’t know about that one night. The night that changed her life forever.
One thing I want to express in this review is how real, and I’ll say again, raw this story was. The writing was phenomenal. There were scenes that I could barely get through because the author didn’t hold anything back. Jennifer Hillier’s writing was vivid and detailed and lacked any kind of censorship. . . which I absolutely loved. I feel that all too often most thrillers that I read lack in that department. When the heinous acts are revealed the authors generally shy away from being too graphic and water down the scene. I truly appreciated being impressed by the writing, and also repulsed at the same time. I think this story will be controversial because of the author’s attention to detail and honestly, which will make for an amazing book to discuss with all your friends. . . or just anyone who will listen.
I also found myself trying to guess and figure out what was going on only to be proven wrong, time and time again. I was pleasantly surprised with the twists and turns and the final big reveal.
JAR OF HEARTS is not your typical cookie cutter thriller. It contains all the ingredients for a perfect novel in that genre: love, obsession, violence, and mystery, but also a whole lot of originality.
I truly cannot recommend this book enough. If you love this genre (heck, even if you don’t love this genre) pick this one up. I’m so excited for what else Jennifer Hillier has in store for us!
