Chloe was three years old when she became Chloe Holden, but her adoption didn’t scar her, and she’s had a great life. Now, fourteen years later, her loving parents’ marriage has fallen apart and her mom has moved them to Joyful, Texas. Starting twelfth grade as the new kid at school, everything Chloe loved about her life is gone. And feelings of déjà vu from her early childhood start haunting her.
When Chloe meets Cash Colton she feels drawn to him, as though they’re kindred spirits. Until Cash tells her the real reason he sought her out: Chloe looks exactly like the daughter his foster parents lost years ago, and he’s determined to figure out the truth.
As Chloe and Cash delve deeper into her adoption, the more things don’t add up, and the more strange things start happening. Why is Chloe’s adoption a secret that people would kill for?
I’m always looking for books that will hook my students. This Heart of Mine by C.C. Hunter was a hit in my class (I enjoyed it as well), so I was excited to read another novel by C.C. Hunter. In Another Life is destined to be a hit as well. Its pacing is perfect and it includes both romance and mystery. The characters are also very connectable, both deal with real life situations: adoption, foster care, and cancer.
Chloe is adopted at the age of three. Her parents love her and give her a wonderful like. Unfortunately divorce hits her parents and leads Chloe and her mother to move to Joyful, Texas. Her mother has cancer and is nearing the end of her treatments. The divorce and cancer has her mother terribly depressed leaving Chloe to fend for herself in many ways and turning her into the adult figure and care taker.
Cash is a foster child and has been in and out of foster homes and has now found a home with the Fullers. The Fullers’ only child was kidnapped years ago. Mrs. Fuller has not given up hope in finding her and has recently been conned by a man pretending to have information about their daughter.
Cash recognizes Chloe immediately. It’s not that he knows her, but he has seen photos of her. Cash has a lot of guilt and feels unworthy because his real father used him in a lot of his own cons. He befriends Chloe right away because he needs to know what she is up to. Only time will tell.
Thanks to Negalley for the opportunity to read and review this novel. I will be adding it to my classroom library.
