Everyone says Lauren Tranter is exhausted, that she needs rest. And they’re right; with newborn twins, Morgan and Riley, she’s never been more tired in her life. But she knows what she saw: that night, in her hospital room, a woman tried to take her babies and replace them with her own…creatures. Yet when the police arrived, they saw no one. Everyone, from her doctor to her husband, thinks she’s imagining things.
A month passes. And one bright summer morning, the babies disappear from Lauren’s side in a park. But when they’re found, something is different about them. The infants look like Morgan and Riley―to everyone else. But to Lauren, something is off. As everyone around her celebrates their return, Lauren begins to scream, These are not my babies.
Determined to bring her true infant sons home, Lauren will risk the unthinkable. But if she’s wrong about what she saw…she’ll be making the biggest mistake of her life.
Compulsive, creepy, and inspired by some of our darkest fairy tales, Little Darlings will have you checking―and rechecking―your own little ones. Just to be sure. Just to be safe.
Fantasy and fairy tale bleed into reality. I was hooked immediately, not always sure where the fairy tale ends and reality begins. My heart raced with the characters as they competed against each other and time to rescue both mother and children.
Lauren is the mother of twins. She’s exhausted and unsure of her capabilities as a mother, but she knows one thing. She loves her children and will always protect them. Her mother bear boldness doesn’t take long to kick in. Someone tries to swap her babies. An old woman, dirty and creepy wants her children. Lauren barricades herself and her children in the restroom and waits for the police to arrive.
Security cannot find any evidence that this dreadful act has occurred and try to convince Lauren that it was a dream. No one believes her, not even her husband. This is just the beginning of her nightmare.
The story comes full circle. Both parties having the same intent, but not quite. Lauren’s rescue requires a devastating act in order to save her twins. The police rescue requires preventing Lauren from committing the horrendous act.
Little Darlings by Melanie Golding imbeds the creepiest of fairy tales into this novel, making it so difficult to put down. I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes dark reads that leave you feeling a wee bit unsettled.
